Birth Story

Here's the story :)

Derek and I went in to be induced at 10:30pm on Sunday November 13. We got all set up and I was induced with a thinning agent at midnight and four am, then pitocin at 8am. The contractions weren't too bad until about 5 am when I finally woke Derek :) At 9:30am I asked for the epidural. I LOVED the epidural - it was perfect and not as painful as I expected and I relaxed immediately. At that point I was about a 4. Around 11am they checked me again and I was at a 10!! Can you believe it? Once the doctor got there and we got all set up and I was ready to push it was almost noon. I had him at 1:11pm after a bit of concern. There was a point where I wasn't making progress and the doctor considered an episiotomy or a vacuum. But then I did it! :) Adam's arm was by his head and his arm and head came out at the same time. I tore because of his arm there - he always has his arms by his head and his hand was by his head in the ultrasound too :)

The doctors then sewed me up and Derek watched Adam being taken care of. He was a healthy 8 pounds! The only issue was he wasn't getting enough oxygen to his blood. So they took him to the NICU to give him oxygen in high percentages and regulated how much oxygen was in his blood. They put him in an oxygen hood. We couldn't hold him but we were able to touch him and hold his hands. It was hard because I couldn't feed or hold him initially. Eventually they weaned him from 70-80% O2 to the 21% we have in our air. They did a chest xray and blood work. Although he was up and down that night by the morning he was steady and was released to us at 9am on the 15th. We did a little victory walk as we wheeled him into our room :)

Since then we have been doing great! He's feeding really well which was a concern because I didn't get to breastfeed him until 20 hours after he was born. In the NICU they gave him an IV for nutrients. He is also sleeping well and only waking up 2 or 3 times a night. We sure love our little boy and are so blessed to have him in our lives!!
